koh samet
Koh samet is my favourite place to stay when I'm in Thailand, some people swear by Samui, Pattaya, Ko pha-ngan, Ko phi-phi, and Phuket, which are all great places-I've been to all of them, but Koh Samet has everything I need and want out of an island to live on for part of the year. Its a 3 -4 hour bus ride from Bangkok, so if island fever strikes you can escape to the city of angels at a drop of a hat. I often have a few days now and again in Pattaya, which is always an experience.
The beaches on Koh Samet are without doubt world class, and most of the time the ocean is a crystal clear turquoise blue. Samet is also the driest island in thailand so it really doesn't matter when you visit there is a good chance the weather will be great
Accomodation is cheap and plentiful with bungalows scattered all along the coast. The bungalows at the top of the island like Sai Keaw tend to be a little more expensive and attracts the day trippers and short visit tourists, so for me it hasn't got that tropical island feel to it.These beaches can be very noisy at night time and because of this I stay on a smaller beach further south which will remain nameless...dont want it getting to crowded !

As I have spent so much time on Samet -its my second home now - I've made lots of friends with locals and some westerners who live there in the winter months of there own countries..pretty wise if you ask me.The thais there are the most laid back and friendliest people I have ever met. Weekends are usually fun as many thais from Bangkok come down for the weekend to party (try Silversands bar on a friday or saturday and you will see what I mean) if you are a westerner you can dive right in there with them..no problem. It does help to speak a tiny bit of thai though, it will impress, especially with the beautiful Thai girls.......oh yes!!!!!, beautiful Thai girls how could I write this without mentioning that !!. I must admit its the icing on the cake, I enjoy the company of a never ending supply of drop dead gorgeous Thai ladies.
Have you any idea how many times I thought I died and went to heaven?!, I've seriously lost count!!

There are so many good points to Samet, the amazing fresh seafood, huge selection of beach restaurants, cheap beer (stay off the Chang if you want to stay sane-trust me!)

I have this amazing life for many months of the year and the most I spend is 1500 baht a day that includes a lovely bungalow seconds from the beach, the best food whenever I want and as much partying as I can handle! thats only AU$50.00 a day!!
